Breed of small, short-legged, smooth-haired terrier, which takes its name from its originator, the English clergyman and fox-hunting enthusiast John Russell (1795–1883). It was recognized by the UK Kennel Club 1990 as a distinct variant of the fox terrier, which it resembles in having a mainly white coat with brown patches.
